Weekly Writing Challenge: Collecting Detail.

The rustling in the woods as I exited my car that evening took me by surprise. It was a new sound, unlike the sounds of twigs snapping and the sharp crackling of tree branches I had heard earlier that cold, winter’s morning. The sound was more pronounced  – like the hurried scrapings of tiny hoofs atop dried, snow-covered leaves, panicking and retreating back into the forest, and…

…it began to make me wonder. Hours before I had seen an 8-point Buck and a doe wandering about by my yard – searching, gazing through the trees as if looking for something lost. It was a few hours later that I had seen them again, but only this time a mile further down the road with a few more deer which had joined them. They were all looking about, some into the wind and some sniffing its trails with their snouts. Then it came to me…

…it was the beginning of deer hunting season, and the roads that morning were filled with F-150’s and orange vests with camouflage clothing. The booming voices from hunters filled the air and the reflections off deer rifle barrels glinted in the sunshine. It all seemed to be a prelude to where I was now – standing in the darkness and praying for those tiny hoofs to find their way back to the herd.
